Summer 2010

Fun & Games

April showers bring May flowers. But, if you're stuck inside on a rainy day, ask a grown-up for help mixing up some Kool-Aid® Playdough.

Kool-Aid Playdough Recipe
Whisk together dry-ingredients:
• 1½ to 2¼ cup flour (start with the smaller amount first)
• ¼ cup salt
• 1½ teaspoon Alum (found in the spice aisle)
• 1 package unsweetened Kool-Aid

Add the following to the dry-ingredient mixture:
• 1½ tablespoon vegetable oil
• 1 cup boiling water

Directions: Stir with a wood spoon until the dough leaves the sides of the bowl. Then remove the dough from the bowl and knead it on a floured surface. Continue to add flour until the dough is mixed well and does not stick to your hands or floured surface. Let the dough cool. Then wrap it in plastic wrap, and store it in a tightly covered container until you're ready to play.

It will smell yummy, but it's not for eating. However, there are no toxic ingredients – unlike store-bought kinds.

Your homemade playdough may last up to six months. You can add 2 to 3 teaspoons of cream of tartar, which can be found in the baking aisle, to make it last longer.
