A star is a big ball of hot gas that gives off heat The sun is really a star. A star can be in space for billions of years. Up to 6,000 stars light up the sky on a clear night. When stars form dot-to-dot patterns it's called a constellation. A shooting star isn't really a star – it's caused by dust and rocks burning up when they fall into the Earth's atmosphere.
