Your "peers" are your friends at school, kids in your neighborhood and even your brothers and sisters. Sometimes they pressure you into doing good things, like studying extra hard to get your name on
the honor roll. But sometimes peer pressure makes us do things we regret – like blow all of our savings and allowance on the fanciest bicycles, electronic gadgets and shoes – just to fit in.
Who's the Boss of You?
One of the easiest ways to tell if you're being peer pressured is hearing, "Come on! Everybody's doing it!" It may be hard to say no to peer pressure, but you can do it!
Remember, your peers are not the boss of you. You're the boss of you! Here are some pointers to keep you in charge:
Ask an adult for help. Parents, teachers and coaches were kids once, too. Ask them what they did to resist caving in to peer pressure.
Have a lot of different friends. If you don't like what one group of friends is saying, hang with your other friends for a while.
Practice makes perfect. Ask a parent to take you to practice depositing money into your savings account. Save for things that you decide are important.
